The 1908 Mint Set without Gold is the last of the "late 19th Century" sets in appearance, containing the Indian Cent, Liberty Nickel and the three silver Barber coins. None of the coins in the set are particularly rare, but acquiring gem examples of the larger Barber coins will not be inexpensive. Adding the gold to the 1908 Mint Set balloons the set from 15 to 30 coins, as both the "No Motto" and "Motto" varieties of the Eagle and Double Eagle were struck. Both the Liberty and the new Indian Half Eagles were made in Philadelphia, resulting in a banner year for gold coinage variety. Toughest to acquire will be the "S" Mint St. Gaudens, as it's rare in any Mint State grade.
