As there were no nickel coins (either three cent or five cent) struck for circulation this year, the Proof nickel coins for 1878 are in greater demand, leading to considerably higher values. The cent is a tougher date as well, though not nearly as much as the preceding year. The silver coins are of normal rarity, though this inaugural year of the Morgan saw two major varieties in Proof - the eight and seven tailfeather types. 1878 also marked the final year of the short-lived Twenty Cent piece, the last two years being Proof-only issues. The gold coins are all significant rarities. Each have an original mintage of only 20 pieces, and survival estimates for each range from 8 to 12 pieces, making them extraordinarily difficult to locate at almost any price.
