The seven-piece 1886 Proof set, while containing no major rarities, does have a few coins of interest. The Nickel is a premium date this year due to the low mintage of the business strikes, and the Three Cent Nickel coin is a Proof Only issue. The Cent has two varieties. Because most of the nation's silver was being used for Morgan dollars, business strike mintages for the Quarter and Half during most of the 1880s are minuscule, and values for Proofs are actually lower than for circulation strikes. Like the 1882 and 1886, the Double Eagle is prohibitively scarce in Mint State so Proofs have long represented the least expensive way to acquire these dates. Patience is required though, as auction appearances occur only a few times per decade. The Quarter Eagle mintage this year is very low as well.
