Stack's Bowers Auction Summer 2025 Global Showcase Auction U.S. Coins Sep-2025 Tompkins Die Stage 1/3, Rea et al. Die State a. Sharply struck and lustrous for the grade, this frosty example also reveal hints of semi-reflective qualities as the surfaces dip into a light. Wisps of pale champagne-apricot iridescence visit the peripheries, but the in-hand appearance is largely one of brilliance. This middle die state of the variety is cracked on the reverse from the lower border, through the leftmost pai of olive leaves, to the upper left corner of the letter U in UNITED.

Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: Purchased as a middle die stage example showing the beginnings of the eventual retained cud found seen on the coin in the following lot. A complementary piece to my plate coin, and also a wholesome example of the 1828 B-1 die marriage.
