Bowers & Merena Auction The May 2010 Online Auction May-2010 1843 Liberty Half Eagle. MS-64 (NGC). The 1843 trails the 1847 as the most readily obtainable Liberty Half Eagle from the 1840s. A popular issue for early date type purposes, as such, this No Motto $5 Lib is readily obtainable in all circulated grades. Mint State examples are scarce, however, and most grade MS-60 to MS-62. Near-Gems in MS-64 are rare and represent the finest in technical quality and eye appeal obtainable for this issue.
This lovely piece is fully struck with handsome orange-gold color that is a bit lighter on the obverse. Satin-to-softly frosted luster is also a bit more vibrant on that side of the coin, but it is no less full on the reverse. With no individually distracting abrasions and strong eye appeal, this top-of-the-Census example belongs in the finest collection of 19th century United States gold.
