Legend Rare Coin Auctions Auction The Regency Auction 47 Sep-2021 The 1844 is one of the most popular dates in the Seated dime series, dubbed the "Orphan Annie" by collector Frank Ross, who in the 1930s hoarded the issue and named it after the popular comic strip character of the era. While not a great rarity in an absolute sense, it is a low mintage with only 72,500 struck. Considered a KEY date, many survivors today are either impaired in some way, or low grade; AU and Mint State examples are RARE. This AU50 has a great look, just a touch of wear is seen on the highest points. Richly toned, you will see shades of slate, amber-rose, and soft iridescent tones when rotated in a light. The definition remains bold with just the lightest touch of friction. Ex Tim Cook Collection, Heritage, May 2005, lot 6420; Volunteer Collection, Heritage, January 2011, lot 3291; our consignor. PCGS 5, NGC 2. No example has sold since January 2014. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $2,000. Rare finer and perfect for a specialist collector of this series. Cert. Number 21244296 PCGS # 4585.00
