Goldberg Auctioneers Auction June 2018 Pre-Long Beach Auction #104 U.S. Coins Jun-2018 Lot 1317 1855. NGC graded MS-68.Boldly struck on each and every device, the field are satin smooth and offer some contrast with the frosty letters and devices. There is notoning beyond a hint of gold on this frosty white gem. In early 1853, the amount of silver bullion was slightly reduced to bring the planchet values back below the melt value on our silver coinage (other than the silver dollar, for traditions sake). A large quantity of old tenor coins were melted down and silver bullion was available, so the mint really cranked up the presses in 1853 when the reduced weight planchets became available. The mass meltings of silver coins stopped with these new "Arrows" coins that were enough lighter in wieght to make any potential profit disappear. Here is a stunning example from 1855. Pop 2; tied for the finest graded.Estimate Value $14,000 - UP
