Stack's Bowers Auction Spring 2023 U.S. Coins Auction Mar-2023 High Condition Census Proof 1870 S$1 A Breathtakingly Beautiful Gem 1871 Liberty Seated Silver Dollar. Proof-66 (PCGS). This is a gorgeous coin that possesses vivid undertones of cobalt blue, salmon-pink and golden-orange iridescence to dominant olive-russet, burnt-orange and pewter-gray patina. The strike is full, the finish intensely reflective, and the level of preservation is truly outstanding. The late date 1871 Liberty Seated dollar has a Proof mintage of 960 pieces. This is the second highest total for the Motto design type after that of the 1870 (1,000 Proofs), and most examples were distributed to contemporary collectors as part of the year's minor and silver coin Proof sets. Demand for these sets seems to have been fairly constant throughout the year as the Proof dollars were struck at widely spaced intervals. Survivors are eagerly sought for specimen type and date purposes, and the present example has superior quality and outstanding eye appeal that rank it among the finest known. Provenance: From the Collection of James Allaire Millholland, 1842-1911. PCGS Population: 1; 2 finer in this category (Proof-67 finest).
