Legend Rare Coin Auctions Auction The Regency Auction 44 Apr-2021 A very pleasing, nearly GEM quality example of this now popular Proof issue. The mint produced 236 Proofs during this first year of the Bela Lyon Pratt design, part of the Renaissance of U.S. Coinage that Teddy Roosevelt envisioned when he and Augustus St. Gaudens began redesigning the $20 and $10 gold pieces a year earlier. The Matte finish, which had been used in Paris, Rome, and London mints going back to the 1890s, was completely different than the brilliant reflective finish used on Proofs going back to the 1820s, and proved unpopular among contemporary collectors. The Matte finish was created by blasting the dies and planchets with a fine grit sand which imparted countless tiny facets that glint in the light. A totally original, essentially GEM quality sand blast Proof quarter eagle that is a delight to behold. The surfaces offer a wonderful Matte finish with infinite microscopic facets that reflect the light. Unlike the majority of survivors that have been dipped and stripped of any originality in an effort to get a higher certified grade, the present coin offers a natural olive-tan golden patina. The details are needle sharp. There are two minor scratches noted in the obverse field that keep this awesome coin from an even higher grade. The eye appeal is very high end for the assigned grade. PCGS 24, NGC 18, CAC 4. This coin is from the March 2017 sale of the Blue Moon Collection which featured a complete 1908 Proof Set where it realized $21,125. The current PCGS Price Guide value is $19,000 and the CAC CPG value is $21,600. This is a great looking near-GEM that should see spirited bidding. Cert. Number 82950385 PCGS # 7957.00
