ABOUT THE COMPETITION

Want to try your hand at grading coins like the experts at PCGS? We’re inviting young numismatists as well as veteran collectors and dealers alike to participate in the PCGS Coin Grading Competition at the 2022 June Long Beach Expo! Participants will have the opportunity to test their grading skills by evaluating a wide variety of coins.

Authorized Dealers and PCGS Collectors Club members will compete to review 20 coins in 30 minutes. Show everyone what you know and have the chance to win prizes, including a $1,000 PCGS Grading Credit, PCGS polo shirts, a PCGS Periodic Table of Coins poster, and more! Young numismatists under the age of 16 also have an opportunity to test their skills for free by grading a 10 coin set in 20 minutes. The young numismatist with the highest score will win a PCGS graded Morgan Dollar!

Young Numismatists are Walk-in Only, No Registration Required, No Registration Fee

PCGS Grading Competition Scoring System
  1. Prefix (i.e. MS, PR): +1 Point
  2. Suffix (i.e. RD, DCAM): +1 Point
  3. Correct Grade (i.e. 64): +2 Points
  4. Grade within 1 point (i.e. 63, 65): +1 Point
  5. Maximum potential points (Adult set): 80 points
  6. Maximum potential points (Young Numismatists set): 40 Points
PCGS Grading Competition Adult Set Rules
  1. Only one entry is allowed per person.
  2. Entry fee for Collectors Club Members & PCGS Authorized Dealers is $20.
  3. You must be an active PCGS Collectors Club member or PCGS Authorized Dealer to participate.
  4. There are 20 coins to grade. Contestants will use an iPad or Laptop provided by PCGS to enter a grade for each coin. There are no “plus” grades. All are whole-number graded coins. Some may have designations (FH, FB, PL etc.) If the coin is a proof, indicate that with the PR-prefix to the numerical grade.
  5. Contestants will have a maximum of 30 minutes to examine the 20 coins and enter grades. The contest closes on Friday, 7/1/22, at 5:00 p.m.
  6. The winner will be announced the morning of Saturday July 2, 2022 via PCGS social media and at the show. Contestants do not need to be present to win.
  7. The winner will be determined by the PCGS judges who will compare the participant’s grade with the grade assigned by PCGS. PCGS is the sole determiner of the winner of the contest. No employee of PCGS or Collectors is eligible.
  8. The contest will be held in room Seaside 6, located next to Heritage lot viewing at the Long Beach Expo. If you are a winner, your prize will be mailed to you.
  9. A completed W-9 is required for all prizes prior to the prize being awarded.
  10. In the event of a tie, any grading credit awarded will be split evenly amongst the winners.
PCGS Grading Competition Young Numismatist Set Rules
  1. You must be 16 years old or younger.
  2. Appointment by walk-in only, no registration is required.
  3. Entry for Young Numismatists is free.
