On May 29, 2008 at the Long Beach Show, PCGS will display hundreds of coins from the PCGS Grading Set. Many of the sets in the complete Grading Set are composed of multiple coins ranging from the numerical grades of Good 4 to MS65. The sets being displayed at Long Beach will include Indian Head cents, Lincoln cents, Liberty Head nickels, Buffalo nickels, Barber dimes, Standing Liberty quarters, Washington quarters, Barber half dollars, Walking Liberty half dollars, Franklin half dollars, Liberty Gold dollars, $2 1/2 Liberty Heads, $5 Liberty Heads, $10 Liberty Heads, $20 Liberty Heads, $20 Saint Gaudens and many altered and counterfeit coins.
One of the coins we'll feature is an altered 1927 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle. The coin was altered by adding a fake "D" mint mark to make it appear as an authentic 1927-D Double Eagle. An authentic 1927-D Double Eagle can be worth millions of dollars if deemed genuine. To the untrained eye, this added "D" mint mark may look authentic, especially if the viewer does not know what to look for.
To view this coin and many other altered and counterfeit coins, be sure to stop by Room 101-B. Beginning on Thursday, the set will be on display from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Also, our own Ron Guth, PCGS President, will be giving a very informative presentation on the "The History of Coin Grading".
