Despite having a high maximum authorized mintage of 8,000 coins for the Proof Platinum coin series, the 2009 One Ounce Proof Platinum coins have completely sold out. This was the only platinum coin offered by the U.S. Mint this year. Last year's mintages for Proof Platinum coins were very low, including the 2008 One Ounce Proofs which had a reported sales figure of fewer than 5,000 coins.
The 2009 One Ounce Proof Platinum coins were placed on sale on December 3, 2009 by the U.S. Mint. Each coin was priced at $1,792. The price of platinum for that day was at about $1,500 an ounce, which means the coins had a premium of $292 above the price of an ounce of platinum. The 2009 One Ounce Proof Platinum coins also sold out despite having a five-coin per household ordering limit. The fact that the Mint canceled several of its other silver and gold coins, not to mention all platinum products, has unquestionably played a major role in the coins' quick sellout.
2009 One Ounce Proof Platinum coins still feature the same Statue of Liberty obverse design used from 1997. The reverse of the coins contain a new design with the theme "To Form a Perfect Union" which also has the words A More Perfect Union on the coin. The reverse of the coins also display four different faces that are symbolic of the diversity of our Nation with the clothing and hair weaving together to form a more perfect union. The new "To Form a Perfect Union" theme will continue until the year 2014 but will feature different designs every year.
