Deciphering a Message - On a 200 Year Old Coin!

-

Benjamin Franklin, one of America's smartest and most powerful men, gave this sound advice to the American population: "Mind Your Business." Franklin put this phrase on the 1787 Fugio Cents. When he did this, he was well aware that these words would forever be on the first official coins issued by the Original 13 states, indicating that he must have felt very strongly about this phrase.

So, what did he really mean by "Mind Your Business?" Many interpretations have been offered over the years and in this article, we will attempt to decipher his message. The phrase Mind Your Business means just that, to mind your business, but by focusing on what you're doing. Not necessarily meaning not to stick your nose in other people's business, but by focusing on what you're doing, you'll have a better chance of being successful.

That was not the only message included by Franklin on the 1787 Fugio Cents. The obverse of the coin also says FUGIO and it has an image of the sun with rays surrounding it along with a sundial design underneath it. These two elements convey that "Time Flies." The reverse of the coin also has 13 round interlocking rings forming an unbroken chain along with the words "UNITED STATES" and "WE ARE ONE" encircled toward the central portion of the design.

Now think about this. Benjamin Franklin, who was one of the most famous individuals of this country, had one opportunity to write a powerful message to his future descendants. His message basically compels them to "Mind Your Business" by focusing on what you're doing, especially since time goes by so quickly.

Now imagine if it was you writing a message on a coin for future generations. What powerful advice, if any, would you put on a small coin about the size of a quarter. While you contemplate this, remember to always MIND YOUR BUSINESS!
