High-Quality Rare Gold Coins Star in Kingswood XIII Sale

An MS65 1907 High Relief $20 gold piece realized $32,258 to lead the way at Kingswood Coin Auctions 13th sale that was held June 22, 2000. Gold coins provided the top five prices in the auction, with rare silver type coins also performing extremely well. Every coin in the sale was graded and authenticated by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS).

“This was the most active Kingswood auction in history,” said Cassi East, Director of Operations for Kingswood Coin Auctions. “There were over 700 bidders participating in the sale via mail, telephone, fax, e-mail, and the Internet. Dealers and collectors alike commented on the strength of the auction in many areas.”

The second-highest price in the sale went to a 1901 $20 Liberty in Proof 64, which sold for $28,750. Other top gold performers included a 1929 $20 St. Gaudens in MS65 at $24,725, a 1795 Small Eagle $5 gold piece in AU58 at $24,150 and a 1911 $2 ½ Indian gold piece in Proof 67 at $23,000.

An 1817 Large cent with 15 Stars, graded MS60 Brown, soared to $2,990. An 1859 Indian cent in Proof 64 realized $2,720 and a 1970-S Doubled Die Lincoln Cent in MS64 Red was bid to $4,140. Proof three cent nickels were especially active, with an 1865 in Proof 65 selling for $5,578 while an 1868 in Proof 66 realized $3,019. Buffalo nickel highlights included a 1918-D in MS65 at $3,680, a 1918-S in MS64 at $5,175 and a 1920-S in MS64 at $4,255.

Silver type coins flexed their muscles throughout the sale, with an 1834 Capped Bust half dime in MS67 selling for $8,338, an 1844 half dime in MS67 at $3,910, an 1820 Capped Bust dime in MS66 at $8,855 and an 1831 Capped Bust dime in MS65 at $4,370. The finest graded 1878-CC dime (an MS66) sold for $3,508, and an 1891 Liberty Seated dime in Proof 67 realized $3,335. A 1914 Barber dime in Proof 68 skyrocketed to $6,095, an 1875-CC twenty cent piece in MS64 realized $2,228 and an 1853 Arrows & Rays quarter in MS64 brought $3,594.

The highest price for a silver coin in the sale went to a Proof 65 1854 Arrows at Date quarter that sold for $21,275. The coin was tied for the finest graded of the date and type, and it is believed that only 20 to 25 pieces were struck. An 1860 Liberty Seated quarter in Proof 65 was strong at $4,370 and a 1905 Barber quarter in Proof 67 realized $4,428. The always-popular 1916 Standing Liberty quarter was represented by an AU58 that sold for $4,543 and a 1920-D quarter in MS67 with a Full Head roared to $11,500.

Half dollars included an 1839-O in MS64 at $8,050, the finest graded 1880 in MS67 at $8,338, an 1884 in MS66 at $4,773, an 1865 in Proof 65 at $4,255, an MS66 Walking Liberty of 1916 at $4,773 and an outstanding 1917-D Reverse in MS65 at $11,213. Franklin half dollars featured two 1949-D examples in MS65 with Full Bell Lines that brought $1,553 each.

An 1867 Liberty Seated dollar in Proof 65 was heroic at $11,569, while Morgan dollar highlights included an 1878 7/8TF (Strong) in MS65 at $2,185, an 1879-CC in MS63DMPL at $3,508, an 1880-S in MS67 at $1,208, an 1882 in MS65DMPL at $3,467, an 1884 in MS66 at $1,783 and an 1884-O in MS67 at $3,163. An 1892 Morgan in MS65 brought $2,990, an 1893-O in MS63 realized $3,680, an 1880 in Proof 66 sold for $6,153, an 1882 in Proof 65 was bid to $5,713 and a 1904 in Proof 66 realized $5,175. Peace dollars included a 1921 in MS65 at $2,013, a 1922-S in MS65 at $1,898 and a 1934 in MS66 at $2,530.

Gold dollars in Kingswood XIII included an 1854 Type Two in MS62 at $7,303, the same date in MS63 at $10,753 and an 1887 in Proof 67 at $17,250. Gold quarter eagles ($2 ½ gold pieces) were highly active, with an 1854-O in MS64 at $13,513, an 1856-C in AU55 at $6,325, an 1877 in MS63 at $7,188, an 1886 in MS65 at $5,578, an 1880 in Proof 65 at $20,125 and an 1899 in Proof 66 at $14,375. In $2 ½ Indian gold, a 1909 in MS66 sold for $7,464, a 1911-D in MS62 realized $4,370 and the 1911 in Proof 67 mentioned above sold for $23,000. An 1854-O $3 gold piece in AU58 that was tied for the finest graded realized $14,375 and an 1889 $3 in Proof 65 sold for $19,550.

The 1795 Small Eagle $5 gold piece in AU58 mentioned above led the half eagles at $24,150. Other $5 coins of note were the 1807 Capped Bust Left in MS64 at $17,135, an 1856-C in AU58 at $6,038 and a 1909-O Indian in AU55 at $3,163. A 1910-D $10 Indian in MS66 realized $9,792.

An 1859-S $20 Liberty in MS61 was bid to $5,405, an 1873-CC in AU53 brought $4,830, an 1891-CC in AU58 realized $7,533 and a 1904 in MS66 sparkled at $8,913. As noted above, a 1901 in Proof 64 realized $28,750, a 1907 High Relief $20 St. Gaudens in MS65 was bid to $32,258 and a 1929 in MS65 brought $24,725.

Commemorative gold was led by a 1905 Lewis & Clark gold dollar in MS64 at $4,600 while silver commemoratives were highlighted by a Hawaiian half dollar in MS66 at $10,063.
