Mory Sale Realizes over $2 Million!

-

The Paul S. Mory Sale delighted bidders from around the world with its magnificent, albeit compact, offering of U.S. coins and paper money. Held as the official auction in conjunction with the Krause’s MidAmerican Coin Expo, this two-session event showed strong market prices from start to finish. Leading the auction was one of the most significant offerings of copper coins to have crossed the block in recent times. A fabulous cabinet of territorial gold coins brought interested buyers to the arena while a magnificent private collection of obsolete currency shared part of the spotlight as well as many spectacular rarities and collector coins which sold across all series. When all was said and done the approximately 1300 lot sale had realized $2,018,053.35. Highlights featured below include the 15% buyers fee.

A lovely 1841 Breen-1 original half cent in Proof-64 red went to a new home at $6,900; two delightful examples of the 1793 Sheldon-1 Chain AMERI cent in Net VG-8 and VG-8 sold at $6,900 and $8,050 respectively; a pleasant 1793 S-10 Wreath Cent in VF-35 crossed the block at $8,050; the historical 1795 “Jefferson Head” S-80 in VG-8 brought an exciting $9,775; and an important 1799 S-189 Normal Date in F-12 went to a happy bidder at $9,775. Silver coinage brought its own share of records with an 1839 Breen-3013, V-2 half dime in Proof-64 (NGC) rocketing to $24,150; the key date in the series, a 1921-D 50¢ in MS-64 (PCGS) sold for a strong $6,325; and a choice Proof-64 (PCGS) 1895 $1 sold for a remarkable $24,150.

A superb cabinet of territorial gold coins packed the auction gallery and kept Bowers and Merena representatives busy helping eager buyers by telephone. Highlights were numerous. An undated C. Bechtler $2.50 K-8 in AU-50 (PCGS) went to a new home at a dazzling $23,000; followed by a C. Bechtler $2.50 K-10 in AU-58 (PCGS) soaring to $11,500; a Moffat & Co. $16 gold ingot K-3 in AU-50 (PCGS) brought an amazing $27,600; and a superb 1851 Humbert $50 K-2 in AU-58 (PCGS) went through the roof at $32,200.

A unique 1849 Pacific Company $1 gold, newly discovered, will be forever remembered in the annals of American numismatics. A year ago, Jerald Reinford discovered this numismatic treasure with a metal detector. Several family members were on hand to watch as the piece sold to a delighted private collector participating by phone for $57,500. The same private collector was ecstatic at being the successful bidder on the 1850 Baldwin & Co. $10 K-3 in EF-40 (NGC) as it sold for $48,300.

And that’s not all! An 1849 Oregon Exchange Company $5 K-1 in EF-40 (PCGS) rocketed to $33,350 and an 1860 Mormon $5 in AU-58 (NGC) soared to $34,500.
