Pinnacle Rarities Purchases the WPE Collection of Classic Commemorative Coins

Pinnacle Rarities, Inc. is pleased to announce the purchase of the WPE Collection of Classic Commemorative Coins. This set is a complete set graded by PCGS featuring examples of each of the 144 issues produced by the U.S. Mint from 1892 to 1954.

WPE (the collector wishes to remain anonymous) began collecting in the 1950's as a teenager. While working in a local coin shop, the classic commemorative series caught his eye. With family obligations and work keeping him away from collecting for periods, WPE continued to work on upgrades when able to attend coin shows. Over the last ten years he really got serious. He finally completed the set in 2006 with the acquisition of a gorgeous MS67 Lafayette (purchased from Pinnacle Rarities). He considers this the capper, and after he obtained this example the chase was over. David Hall, President of Collectors Universe and founder of PCGS commented "This is a massive set and a grand undertaking in which WPE has succeeded admirably."

The set has won the "Best of the Registry" award four years running. Before being retired on July 1st, it ranked number one on the PCGS Registry for 144 piece commemorative sets as well as third on their all-time finest list. The 50 coins that comprise the "type set" rank as fifth all-time and, before retirement, ranked third in current collections. A PCGS expert stated simply "There are some remarkably beautiful coins in this set."

Highlights include:

Single-finest graded Albany PCGS MS68
One of only two MS68 Spanish Trails
One of only four PCGS MS67 Lafayette Dollars
One of only five PCGS MS68 Californias
One of only three PCGS MS68 Elgins
