"In the past, the grading and authentication of mint errors has been restricted to die varieties, such as the 1955 Double Die cent or the 1937-D 3-Legged Buffalo nickel," said Richard Montgomery, PCGS president. "This new program will feature grading and authentication of mint errors created by mistakes made during the striking process. This new program will enable PCGS to certify some of the most spectacular striking errors in all of U.S. numismatics."
World-renowned error-coin expert Fred Weinberg will authenticate and describe every coin submitted to the new program. Weinberg has been involved in mint errors since 1965, and brings 35 years of experience and knowledge to the mint error program. Each coin that is approved for grading will be described on the PCGS holder with up to 22 characters of information.
The error coins that can be encapsulated will be limited by several factors. One: the coin must be authentic. Two: the coin can not have major damage from a coin counting machine or other non-Mint factor. Three: the error must be a non-proof US coin. Four, the dimensions can not exceed 1/4" in height or 1 11/16" in diameter, as those are the maximum interior dimensions of the largest PCGS holder available.
"Collectors and dealers alike are excited about this new PCGS program," Weinberg said. "In fact, I have been asked frequently by both collectors and dealers when they can begin submitting their error coins for authentication and holdering."
The new PCGS mint error program has been two years in the making. "It has taken a long time to work out all of the particulars," Montgomery noted. "The problems associated with holdering coins of such unusual shapes and sizes has now been worked out, and the addition of Fred Weinberg to our authenticating team was an important element as well. We are confident that the new mint error program will be enthusiastically received throughout the numismatic community."
Those who wish to submit their error coins for PCGS certification may do so through a PCGS Authorized Dealer. Members of the PCGS Collectors Club may submit their error coins directly to PCGS. Error coins must be submitted on a separate invoice, and should not be mixed with regular submissions.
