Spouse Coin Mintages - Lowered to 15,000

-

Since the inception of the Spouse Gold Coin program in 2007, the Spouse coins have suffered diminished interest from collectors.

In the beginning of the program, the coins had a maximum mintage of 40,000 coins. And even with the mintage of 40,000 coins, the coins were selling out very quickly. Including the aftermarket, the coins were realizing much higher premiums than the initial cost of purchasing them directly from the U.S. Mint.

Initially, the first three Spouse coins – the Martha Washington, Abigail Adams and the Jefferson's Spouse coins sold out. However, by the fourth release of the Dolley Madison Spouse coins, demand decreased substantially and in the end, they only sold around 30,000 Uncirculated and Proof Dolley Madison Spouse coins combined.

By the fifth Spouse coin release, the Louisa Adams Spouse coin, the Mint sold fewer than 12,000 Uncirculated and Proof Louisa Adams coins combined. This was unquestionably a significant drop from the previously issued coin. Furthermore, after the release of the Louisa Adams Spouse coins, interest in the Spouse coins has declined even more.

Consequently, with the introduction of the Abigail Fillmore Spouse coins, the U.S. Mint decided to decrease the total maximum mintages to 15,000 total coins, both Uncirculated and Proof versions combined.

The Abigail Fillmore Uncirculated and proof Spouse coins went on sale on March 18, 2010 and are still available directly from the U.S. Mint.
