Give Someone a Dollar Today!

Did you know November 3 is Give Someone a Dollar Day? This information eluded me for years until I was looking for a list of holidays related to money and found out this holiday is absolutely real. My first thought is that celebrating this day with real gusto will probably cost me more than when I gave a hoot and not pollute. Thankfully I still have an endless supply of hoots to give about our environment.

But dollars? I’m in a limited supply of those. Yet, that doesn’t mean that even those of us on a shoestring budget can’t celebrate this annual holiday in an inexpensively numismatic way.

Seriously, numismatists can use this day to help spread the love for our hobby. And here’s how we can do it: by giving a dollar. Ah, but not just any dollar!

Why not give someone a special type of dollar? I’m not talking about depleting yourself of your Morgan and Peace Dollars, nor even your American Silver Eagles…

However, many of us have spare Eisenhower Dollars, Susan B. Anthony Dollars, “Golden” Sacagawea and Presidential $1 coins, and even circulated $1 Silver Certificates from the middle 20th century. Circulated versions of any of these pieces are generally worth little over face value. But, to someone who isn’t yet a numismatist – and I’m not just talking about kids here – these are novel pieces that few outside our numismatic community today have seen, let alone held. Certainly, they’d find such pieces fascinating.

It may be that by giving someone one of these dollars, you’re doing more than just passing a buck. You could be giving them the very keys to the door of intrigue that opens them to a lifetime of enjoyment in numismatics. That surely makes you think differently about giving a dollar to someone today, huh? I can tell you that it surely does me.

And come to think about it, I may just have one or two of these cool dollars to spare. How about you?
