PCGS-Certified Dimes Make International Headlines

(Tampa, Florida) – Two United States dimes certified by Professional Coin Grading Service (www.PCGS.com) have generated worldwide news headlines. One dime is a spectacular mint error, the other is a famous American numismatic rarity.

An undated Roosevelt dime struck on a nail sold for $42,300 and the finest PCGS-certified 1894-S Barber dime, graded PCGS PR66, was sold for $1,997,500 in auctions conducted respectively on January 6 and 7, 2016 by Heritage Auctions. The auctions were held in conjunction with the 2016 Florida United Numismatists convention in Tampa, Florida.

An Associated Press story about the 1894-S dime quoted PCGS Co-Founder and Collectors Universe President David Hall: "There's a couple of iconic rarities in the rare coin market. A couple of coins have been known among the rarest of the rare for 100 years and this is one of those numismatic icons."

During 2015, 11 of the 17 U.S. rare coins that sold at auction for $1 million or more were certified for authenticity and grade by PCGS.
