PCGS Now Recognizing and Attributing Liberty Seated Dollar Varieties

United States coin die varieties have long been a favorite collecting and researching area for many numismatists. Recently, PCGS expanded its variety attribution services to include a series that is widely popular yet, until recently, often neglected for varieties: Liberty Seated Dollars. With the popularity of collecting Flowing Hair and Bust Dollars by Bolender and Bowers-Borckardt numbers, as well as Morgan and Peace Dollars by VAM varieties, the Liberty Seated Dollar series had been relegated to listings of A Guide Book of United States Coins (“Red Book”) and Cherrypickers’ Guide to Rare Die Varieties of United States Coins.

With the research and work of Dick Osburn and Brian Cushing, “A Register of Liberty Seated Dollar Varieties” has been cataloged, photographed, and listed on the website seateddollarvarieties.com. While this research is not complete, it begins the identification of the dies used by the United States Mint to produce the coins, and the die marriages and links between them. Referencing each variety by Osburn-Cushing (OC) numbers, identification will be made for coins submitted to PCGS with variety attribution service.

The Liberty Seated coinage series are finally starting to see the in-depth research and study as has already been documented for other United States coinages. Currently, PCGS recognizes and attributes Liberty Seated Dimes by Fortin (F) numbers and Liberty Seated Half Dollars by Wiley-Bugert (WB) numbers, and they will now recognize Liberty Seated Dollars by Osburn Cushing (OC) numbers. It is exciting to see what discoveries are yet to be made as we continue to identify and attribute coinage.
