PCGS Set Registry Update

Francisco Zúñiga was born in 1912 to parents who were sculptors within Costa Rica. From an early age, Francisco had been exposed to the art via his family, and he probably saw them working on various sculpting projects. By the age of 15, he had studied art history through references, was developing spatial acuity, and began working with his father in his shop during 1927. Zúñiga was being recognized for his paintings and sculpting abilities. He was encouraged to further his studies abroad, but a scholarship was never offered. His supporters helped Francisco with his first art exhibit, which was a success.

During the 1930s, Zúñiga exhibited more of his works, then decided to immigrate to Mexico City in 1936. He studied formally at La Escuela de Talla Directa, which is a carving school. Over the next few years, he would take assistant positions with mentors who would broaden his artistic imagination, and he took a position at La Esmeralda in 1938 as a staff member. Zúñiga continued his craft and received numerous awards over the next several decades. He retired from his teaching position in 1970 and continued to exhibit his works all over the world. PCGS has listed a set titled 1970 Costa Rica Proof Set, which displays Francisco Zúñiga's famous work from 1935 titled La Maternidad on the 25 colones denomination.
