PCGS CoinFacts Update
Collectors widely pursue the 1909 VDB Lincoln Cent, the earliest Philadelphia-minted iteration of Lincoln Cents. While business strikes are relatively common, few collectors may realize just how rare the proof version of this coin is. Only 1,194 examples of the 1909 VDB Proof Lincoln Cent were struck, and its value often rivals or even exceeds that of its more famous key-date counterpart, the 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent. Read more.

On October 24, 1814, José Rafael Carrera y Turcios was born near Guatemala City to a family with humble beginnings. He enlisted in the army at age 12, serving roughly nine years. After leaving the army in 1835, he became a pig farmer and married Petrona Garcia. In 1837, he began joining local movements seeking to restore traditions and became a voice for the people. Carrera engaged in numerous battles over the next few years, losing many. This did not deter his passion to seek freedom for the people of Guatemala and help them overcome Spanish rule. He was named president in 1844 and declared Guatemala an independent nation on March 21, 1847. He fled to Mexico in exile in 1848 but returned in the spring of 1849. In 1852, he made an international treaty with the Catholic Church, later signing a treaty with the British Crown in 1859 regarding Belize, which was building a transoceanic railroad to spur trade. Rafael Carrera is a national hero, first appearing on a coin in 1860. The PCGS MS63 1860-R 4 Reales is the finest known to date in the Guatemala 4 Reales Carerra Head Set, Circulation Strikes (1860-1869) that PCGS has recently posted.
