PCGS Set Registry Update
The practice of giving silver coins as gifts is found across many cultures. In India, silver coins are distributed among family members and friends during Diwali (the "Festival of Lights"). In Great Britain, the silver sixpence is sometimes given away by brides as a wedding charm, and similar practices exist in China. In Jewish culture, Pidyon Haben translates to “redemption of the firstborn” for newborn boys. This religious ceremony takes place on the 31st day after the birth of the boy, who receives silver coins. It’s believed this tradition began during the 10th plague, when newborns were saved. This tradition continues into modern times, with the Bank of Israel issuing silver coins to commemorate this ceremony. This colorful PCGS MS66 1976 Pidyon Haben 25 Lirot is part of the Israel 10 and 25 Lirot Commemorative Pidyon Haben Date Set, (1970-1977) that PCGS has recently posted. Good luck building your sets!
