The Australian Melbourne Cup in Flemington first started in 1861. This race has been a public holiday in Australia since 1876, and the event has become part of Australian culture. Each year, horses that are three years and older compete in a race which was originally over two miles long. The race was reduced to one mile in 1972, and a horse by the name of Kingston Rule has been the reigning champion since 1990. Between 300 and 400 horses are nominated for the race, but only 24 horses make the final cut. In 2010, The Australian Mint created three different coins commemorating this race. Two of the coins are struck in a silver frosted proof finish with gold-plated accents and the other coin is a circulation strike. PCGS has recently listed the Australian Fifty Cents Melbourne Cup Set, Circulation Strikes and Proof (2010) for collectors to consider building.
Additional sets from various countries have been added, so please feel free to browse the PCGS Set Registry when you have a chance and you may find there is a set for almost anyone to build. The PCGS Set Registry offers many different sets from all over the world and specialty sets for advanced collectors. We appreciate your continued patronage!
