1797 1/2C 1 Above 1 G6BN PCGS #1042

CAC. The 1797 Liberty Cap Right Half Cent is an iconic early copper issue, struck from a modest mintage of just 127,840 pieces, with an estimated 200 examples surviving across all grades. This example features the famed "1 Over 1" die variety, one of the most dramatic and visually striking blundered date errors in all of U.S. coinage. The secondary "1" is clearly visible above the final digit, with its thinner profile and absence of bottom serifs indicating an incomplete attempt at effacement—an oversight so bold that Ed. Frossard initially mistook it for a die break in his 1879 commentary. Most known examples of this variety are believed to be struck over cut-down Talbot, Allum & Lee tokens (Breen’s 1c attribution), though this piece shows no visible undertype—supporting the theory, as advanced by Manley, that many such pieces were struck on rolled copper planchet stock rather than true virgin blanks. This particular example displays smooth, original surfaces in a consistent brown tone with olive-bronze undertones, honest wear, and strong visual appeal for the grade. The date is bold, and key reverse elements such as the denomination and wreath remain discernible. While well-worn, the coin is free from any signs of cleaning or damage and exhibits the classic surface texture sought by advanced early copper specialists. The PCGS Price Guide lists the variety at $1,250, whilst CAC reports just 2 coins in this grade and 12 finer, with no sales recorded for CAC. Bear in mind, that CAC examples of this issue trade at double non-CAC: the F15 PCGS CAC at $3,120 07/25 HA and the VF20 PCGS CAC at $4,080 10/25 HA.

CAC 0590. “Above-Average Eye Appeal. 1872 3CS PR65 PCGS. CAC. Deep rose and cobalt-blue patina in the obverse field frames the lighter-toned devices. The reverse exhibits reddish toning laced with whispers of sky-blue. The design elements are sharply struck and both sides have been well-cared for, further enhancing the eye appeal. Population Data (8/15): PCGS reports 38 submissions in PR65 and 22 finer. NGC shows 43 Gems and 31 finer. Heritage Commentary: The meager 1,000-piece circulation-strike mintage and its subsequent rarity in all grades places heavy pressure on the proofs from date collectors. The present Gem proof with its above-average eye appeal is an excellent choice for a high-grade date collection. Provenance: R.M. Smythe (11/2000), lot 1612.(Registry values: N1793).”

The strike is sharp and this is a scarce issue with a mintage of only 604,000 pieces. Gems like this are downright sparse, and finer examples are quite difficult to obtain at any price. There is a minor planchet streak on the upper reverse, as made at the Mint. PCGS 47, NGC 18, CAC 13. Of those noted at PCGS only four have the + grade finer, and the top example they’ve seen is a single MS67. The CoinFacts website estimates this date and grade at $1,475.00 which seems about right given the quality and rarity of this date.”

CAC 0732. “Richly Toned MS64. Seldom Seen With CAC Approval. 1888 5C MS64 PCGS. CAC. Copious mint luster and lavish reddish-gold patina with faint jade accents enhance the surfaces of this near-Gem 1888 Liberty nickel, part of a complete set (no 1913!) that Gene Gardner purchased in 2007. A single tick before Liberty's mouth is among the few mentionable signs of contact. Despite much larger overall population numbers for the issue, CAC narrows down the number with its green approval sticker to only 13 in this grade and 20 finer (8/15). Ex: Purchased from Larry Whitlow (5/2007).(Registry values: N991).”

CAC 0743 (Regency 37, March 2020, lot #95). “If you are someone who has been collecting Liberty Head nickels for a while, you will appreciate the WONDERFUL quality of this date run offered in this sale. Think of how many frogs you have discarded due to ugly toning, milk spots, bagmarks, etc, to get to the prince (or in this case PRINCESS). This piece is the CAT’S MEOW of 1894 nickels! It has everything going for it! Stunning luster is enhanced by beautiful cascading color in shades of rose, ice blue, tangerine and lemon yellow. Crisp, fully struck motifs. One small break in luster to the right of the lower portion of the V is all that is worth mentioning. PCGS 60; NGC 51, CAC 16. Of the 16 CAC specimens, I cannot imagine they are any nicer than this example! One sold in March 2019 for $1,140 and we think this coin should bring more! Bid liberally if you want to add this beauty to your set!“

CAC. “If this cataloguer could choose one coin to keep, it would undoubtedly be this stunning PCGS 1935 Buffalo Nickel. This "monster" piece dazzles with electric toning, featuring vivid iridescent crimsons and blues along the edges, transitioning to soft pastels in the centers on both sides. Beyond its remarkable toning, the luster is extraordinary, with a dynamic cartwheel effect that leaps from the coin’s surfaces accenting the sharply struck devices. Fewer than 0.04% of these coins have survived in such pristine condition, and none finer is currently recognized by CAC. A MS67+ in this date is extremely rare and beyond this there are just eight coins finer at PCGS none with CAC endorsement. A toned MS68 sold for $41,125 12/19 LE."

PCGS estimates 250 1801 H10C are known in all grades; however, most are bent, holed or damaged; we further see this by how only 72 PCGS and 22 NGC are certified in all grades including resubmissions. Of the sub 100 known, there have been only 9 that has been approved by CAC in all grades! NO CAC or PCGS comps are seen, in fact, no NGC comp is also noted within the past 16 years. PCGS lists a Price Guide of $1,450 though we believe this not updated. There has been no CAC sale in any grade in the past decade except an AU58 PCGS CAC and the MS66+ PCGS CAC, 5 and 6 figures coins respectfully. CAC 0875. “All Draped Bust Heraldic Eagle Half Dime are rare. Spanning only for 6 years, 1800-1805, this type is incredibly popular and mostly collected in Lowball conditions. 1801 H10C is relatively in expensive, as other days are uber rare 6-figure like the 1802 H10C. The closest and most relevant APR is a NON-CAC PCGS VG08 PCGS $1,740 10/21 HA, which was by no means choice or original. This is one of the lowest graded example with only 2 certified lower, none of which is CAC. A great coin for the type and year.”

CAC 0915. “Rare in all grades, 1849 New Orleans Half Dime has one of the smallest mintage in the entire Liberty Seated Half Dime series, as such only 200 are known today in all grades. In AU this coin becomes a 4 figure coin. Plagued by worn dies, all 1849-O H10C are struck from worn dies, as such finding an example with high eye appeal is incredibly tough. The present example is toned with some cobalt blue around the peripheries. On the reverse, we see some die clash, indicative of worn dies. A lovely example with tremendous amount of history. CAC POP 2 with no auction records except 3 grades lower XF45 CAC that sold for $1,050 in 2019. A want list coin for many collectors who require a CAC and problem-free example PCGS example.”
