Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of Early United States Cents

Obverse 17. Hair details have been added to the die to repair the "bald spot" of number 26.

Reverse U. Similar to reverse T, but the following will distinguish them: 1) ME and F are normal, not irregularly shaped or recut. 2) Berry below C(E) has a heavy stem slanting down to the right. 3) Berry above O(N) has its stem aiming at the space between F A; on reverse T, this stem aims between AM. 4) Small spine on the outer berry below R.

Edge: Plain edge (PE).

Die states: I. Horizontal crack is heavier than in number 26. Heavy clash marks from dentils at LIBERTY and right. Reverse cracked from the bases of CA to the ribbon and down through 00.

II. First crack extends to the center of I, now closely resembling that on state III of reverse T. Cracked from the rim to left top of u, ribbon, and fraction bar.

III. Horizontal crack almost reaches the rim behind the head. Small triangular rim break below the fraction; the state I crack joins it.

Equivalents: Proskey 14. Doughty 152. McGirk 4J3. Ross 13:9-K. Clapp-Newcomb 19. Sheldon 206. EAC 16. Encyclopedia 1737.
