Obverse: The same as [Browning] 8 and 9.

Reverse: In legend, words OF and AMERICA are very close together. Ends of scroll: left under upright of D; right under foot of A at extreme right. On scroll: I under space between A and T; S under S at left.

Obverse die perfect; reverse cracked from bottom edge through 2, to eagle's claws at left.

A rare variety. Among the ten varieties found of this date, Nos. 2 and 3 appear to be the most common; Nos 1 and 4 are more rare; of the next six Nos. 5 to 10 inclusive, not an Uncirculated piece has been found except No. 8, a sharp Proof. This variety in worn condition is the most common of the six. Of the remaining five, Nos. 5, 6, 7, 9 and 10, only two to four pieces have been found in any condition.

Die States:
I. Perfect reverse. Extremely rare.
II. Crack, rim through left part of 2 to claw.
III. Heavy obverse clash marks from shield, eagle and scroll. Extremely rare.

A worn (Good to VG) example shows small counterstamped head of Washington, thought to be associated with the 1824 triumphal return of Lafayette, when many coins were impressed with heads of both generals. This first appears in Bowers & Ruddy RCR 19 (1-2/74), later in RCR's 22-29 inclusive (1975-1977).
