1936 Canadian Cent PCGS MS66RD Sells for $402,500

-

A 1936 Canadian George V Dot Cent graded PCGS MS66 Red recently sold for a record price of $402,500. This specimen was previously purchased for $230,000 by The Sid and Alicia Belzberg Collection of Canadian Coinage in 2003.

In 1937, during the delay in the preparation of new obverses in London, the Royal Canadian Mint was forced to strike from the 1936 dies. The dies are said to have been marked with a tiny dot on the reverse. This was to indicate that the coins were struck in a year different from that on the dies and with the bust of the late king.

The 1936 Dot cent in PCGS MS66 Red is one of only three coins of this type. The coin was practically unobtainable in the past, since John Jay Pittman owned all three known examples from 1961 and until his death. This is unquestionably great news for the world coin market, as it has brought a lot of confidence to both dealers and collectors of world coins.

Rockie Herrera works for PCGS in the World Coins Department. He enjoys collecting coins from different countries including several U.S. coins.
