In 2008, the U.S. Mint offered fractional Gold Buffaloes for the first time ever. The fractional Gold Buffalo denominations included $5, $10 and $25 coins, and the one-ounce $50 Gold Buffaloes continued to be offered.
The 2008 Proof Buffaloes were originally offered by the Mint at a price of $2,219.95 as a four-piece set. The Mint later reduced the price to just over $2,000 for the set. All coins were struck in 24 Karat gold planchets. The Mint also struck fractional uncirculated Gold Buffaloes.
Today, all fractional Gold Buffaloes have proved to be extremely popular, as there is an unquestionably high demand for these coins. The fact that fractional Gold Buffaloes were produced for just one year makes them even more desirable.
For those who were smart and purchased the sets, they have done very well. Currently, the four-piece proof sets are selling for well over $7,000 and one even sold for more than $8,000. Not a bad return for a set that cost around $2,000 in 2008 – a four-fold increase in less than two years!
