2016-W Gold Walking Liberty Half Dollars Released

The 2016 Gold Walking Liberty Half Dollar debuted November 17, 2016. The coins were offered directly by the U.S. Mint at an issue price of $865 each. The coin has ½ ounce of pure 24 karat gold. The spot price of gold on November 17, the day the coins went on sale, was at about $1,230. Therefore, the price of each coin was about $250 over the spot price of gold. The first day of sales was about 43,725, while the maximum mintage is set at 70,000. By the next day, some collectors reported they already received their orders and had the coins in hand; some even posted actual images of the coin.

This is the third and last coin issued in the 2016 Gold Centennial Coin Series. Originally the Mint issued the Gold 2016-W Mercury Dime on April 21, 2016 with an issue price of $205 each. Its maximum authorized mintage was set at 125,000. As of this writing, some of the coins still remain available if purchased directly through the U.S. Mint.

The 2016-W Gold Standing Liberty Quarter was the second coin issued in the series. The U.S Mint originally offered it on September 9, 2016 with an issue price of $485. Its maximum authorized mintage was set at 100,000. As of today, some of the coins also remain available directly through the U.S. Mint.

Finally, there was the 2016-W Gold Walking Liberty Half Dollar, the third and final coin in the three-coin Centennial Series. The coins also remain available through the U.S. Mint. No doubt many collectors are very happy now that they have been able to complete their three-piece Centennial 2016 Gold Coin Set. Overall, I believe the 2016 Centennial Gold Coin Series was a success, as it brought lots of excitement to the coin market. Collectors had the opportunity to see some of the U.S.'s most beautiful coin designs resurrected into very nice gold versions. Hopefully the U.S. Mint will continue to produce new and exciting coin designs next year and for many years to come.
