PCGS has worked with a leading numismatic author to help resurrect a seminal reference on Mexican medals that had been out of print since the 1980s. PCGS and Matthew Ruttley collaborated to reissue Grove’s Medals of Mexico, Volume 2 (1821-1971), an authoritative guide on Mexican medals ranging from the nation’s prolific period of medal production during the 19th and 20th century. The book resurrects the lifetime work of numismatic expert Frank Grove, who spent decades cataloging Mexican medals.

“We were thrilled to work with Matthew on this project, which provides updates on nearly 2,000 medals and brings them to life with high-resolution, full-color images wherever possible,” said PCGS President Stephanie Sabin, who wrote the book’s foreword. “We bring this book into the 21st century with PCGS catalog numbers alongside every entry for easy cross reference, yet many charming details from the past remain, especially for the rarest medals that haven’t been seen since the 1970s and are still coupled in the book with their original photographs and sketches.”

Author Matthew Ruttley said, “Mexican medals are one of the most exciting and under-documented areas in world numismatics, and the better part of a year and a half went into the republication of this book. Even after years working in the series I kept finding surprises, off-metal strikes, and mulings that had slipped through unrecorded. The collaboration with PCGS made the difference. It has been the most rewarding project I have taken on in Mexican numismatics.”

An essential standard that grading companies and auction houses have used for decades, Grove’s Medals of Mexico, Volume 2 (1821-1971) is now available to a new generation of collectors, graders, and auctioneers. Among the focal points in this edition is a complete survey of Iturbide and Maximilian imperial medals, among the most prized of the Mexican medals. The book serves as a complement to Grove’s Medals of Mexico, Volume 1, a tome that centers on colonial-era issues.

The hardcover reissue of Grove’s Medals of Mexico, Volume 2 (1821-1971) was published under ISBN 979-8-9888531-3-8 and includes 489 pages as well as a silk ribbon bookmark. The book can be ordered for $89 (which includes shipping in the United States) by inquiring via [email protected] or by visiting the International Fine Objects at https://www.ifobjects.com/article/coin-books-for-sale.
