PCGS CoinFacts Update

While the Philadelphia Mint actually spent most of 1901 operating out of its legacy Chestnut Street facility before transitioning to a brand-new, electrified factory that October, the year's coinage still reflected a period of modern transition. For instance, eagle-eyed collectors will note subtle changes to the 1901 proof quarter's reverse - the result of hub tinkering by Chief Engraver Charles Barber in mid-1900 that finally made its debut on the proof presses this year.   Read more.

PCGS Set Registry Update

On June 10, 1959, the Cleveland Indians Major League Baseball team played the Baltimore Orioles at Memorial Stadium. Cleveland Indians outfielder Rocky Colavito mainly played right field and sometimes left field. He batted four times that day and hit four home runs! Only 21 players have accomplished this feat to date, and that year Colavito was selected to the All Star team. Major League Baseball also hosted not just one but two All Star games. The first game was played at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh on July 7, 1959, and the second tilt occurred at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on August 3, 1959. Major League Baseball was trying to increase viewership for the sport and experimented with hosting two games on two different coasts. Another change came along in 1959 when the U.S. Mint replaced the long-running Wheat Ears reverse on the Lincoln Cent with the new Lincoln Memorial reverse.
