PCGS Set Registry Update

In 1936, Germany signed agreements with Italy and Japan, forming the Axis powers -- eventually to also include Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Slovakia, and Croatia. The Allied powers were led by Great Britain, the Soviet Union, and the United States. World War II started on September 1, 1939, when Germany invaded Poland. Metal shortages frequently persisted because of the increased need for munitions during the war. While Great Britain had reduced the silver fineness for its coinage from .925 to .500 in 1920, the United States was still issuing coins with .900 silver fineness in 1939, a year of typical output for the U.S. Many of the 1939 coins are affordable in a PCGS MS65 designation. However, when grades exceed MS67, prices drastically rise, and Set Registry patrons may chase these higher-graded coins for their sets. The interesting-looking Denver-struck Washington Quarter shown above is part of the 1939 Year Set for collectors to consider building. Good luck building your sets.
