Finest-Certified U.S. Coins Headline VCD Auctions’ “Registry Set Bonanza”

Bidding is now open in VCD #14 - The Registry Set Bonanza, a carefully selected 48-lot auction featuring some of the finest certified United States coins available to collectors.

The online auction includes major condition rarities, key dates, celebrated pedigrees, and numerous coins positioned at or near the top of current population reports. The first lot will begin closing on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at 5 pm Pacific Time, and the sale carries a 10% buyer’s premium.

“This sale was assembled for collectors who understand how difficult it is to locate the right coin once they reach the upper levels of a registry set,” said Charles Jonath, president and chief numismatist of VCD Auctions. “Many of these coins are not simply high grade. They represent the finest or among the finest examples certified for their respective issues, often with outstanding color, luster, strike, or pedigree.”

Finest-Certified 1858/7 Flying Eagle Cent

Leading the auction is Lot 10, an 1858/7 Strong Overdate Flying Eagle Cent graded PCGS MS66. According to the auction catalog and population data cited at the time of cataloging, it is the sole example certified by PCGS at MS66, with none graded finer.

The 1858/7 is the only overdate in the brief Flying Eagle Cent series and has long been recognized as one of its most desirable varieties. The offered coin combines the importance of the overdate with exceptional preservation and stands alone at the top of the PCGS census with a reported population of one and none finer.

Single-Finest 1927-D Mercury Dime

Another major registry-set opportunity is Lot 12, the 1927-D Mercury Dime graded PCGS MS67FB. The coin is reported as the single finest Full Bands example certified by PCGS, with a population of one and none graded higher.

Full Bands examples of the 1927-D are notably difficult because many coins were incompletely struck across the central bands of the reverse fasces. The offered example combines a complete strike with strong cartwheel luster and light natural toning.

Tied-Finest 1879 Liberty Head Double Eagle

Gold specialists will find an important condition rarity in Lot 34, an 1879 Liberty Head Double Eagle graded PCGS MS65. One of only two examples reported at that grade with none finer, the coin is tied for the highest grade awarded by PCGS for the date.

The 1879 is a scarce Philadelphia Mint issue in the Type Three Liberty Head Double Eagle series. PCGS estimates that approximately 1,850 examples survive across all grades, while true Gem Mint State representatives remain exceptionally elusive.

PCGS Plate Coin And Monster Rainbow Toner

Among the auction’s most visually distinctive offerings is Lot 27, a 1955-D Washington Quarter graded PCGS MS67+.

The coin displays vivid multicolored toning over booming underlying luster and is identified in the VCD catalog as the PCGS CoinFacts plate example for the issue. According to the catalog, it is presently the finest example certified by PCGS and stands above a grade level that itself proved historically difficult to achieve for the date.
