While there are likely three times as many surviving examples as legendary gold dealer David W. Akers estimated in the 1970s, the 1852-D Liberty Head Quarter Eagle's mintage of 4,078 represents a shift in production numbers for the denomination at the Dahlonega Mint. A decade later, after the Civil War broke out, gold coinage production ceased in North Georgia and neighboring Charlotte.   Read more.

PCGS Set Registry Update

On February 21, 1804, Richard Trevithick operated the first steam-powered locomotive, hauling at the tramway of the Penydarren Ironworks in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales. The innovation of the steam locomotive changed how business was conducted and how people traveled. This innovation spawned the locomotive industry and the frenzy soon went global. Railroads became an integral part of many nations' economies, including Australia's. The first railroad built in the "Land Down Under" was constructed in 1831 by the Australian Agricultural Company. This railroad was primarily built to support a coal mine. More railways were added throughout the subsequent years, and the engines that pulled the railcars became legendary. Take, for example, the H220 locomotive known as "Heavy Harry," which was the largest steam locomotive ever built in Australia. The steam locomotive was in service from 1941 through 1958 and weighed an astonishing 260 tons! Another iconic steam engine is known as the 520 Class No. 520 "Sir Malcolm Barclay-Harvey," a passenger train that began operating in 1943. The locomotive has made appearances over the past few decades and may appear on the rails once again after an overhaul. The coin shown above is part of the Australian Fifty Cents Rail Heritage Set, Circulation Strikes (2025) for collectors to consider building.
