France released a new design for the 20 francs gold coin in 1899. This series of coins were minted until 1914 and then the production of the coin was discontinued. In 1921, about 200,000 coins dated from 1914 were re-struck to increase the gold stock for potential buyers of gold bullion within France. These 20 francs coins were struck from the original dies and are not discernible from the original strikes. Between 1951 and 1960, the government of France decided to restrike coins dated 1907 to 1914. The government struck about 37 million coins to devalue a bond that was due soon, and this financial instrument was attached to the price of gold. In the short term, the plan was a good one, but by 1970 the strategy backfired as the price of gold increased. The restrikes of these coins have subtle differences in the appearance of the metal and the dies are slightly different as well. The term for "restrike" in French is "refrappe," and PCGS has listed the French 20 Franc Refrappe Gold Rooster, Circulation Strikes (1907-1914) for collectors to consider building.
