(Newport Beach, CA) -- A U.S. Navy technician's 1937-D "three-legged" variety Indian Head/Buffalo nickel is now part of numismatic marketplace history. On December 12th it was registered as the seven millionth coin submitted to Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS), a division of publicly-held Collectors Universe (NASDAQ: CLCT).
The nickel is graded PCGS AU-55 and the ecstatic notation, "3 Legs - 7 Millionth Coin!," is printed on the encapsulation insert.
"This certainly is a major milestone," said Richard Montgomery, PCGS President. "It's proof that PCGS is the authentication and grading service of choice for both collectors and dealers. Since we started in February 1986 a lot of people have entrusted us with seven million submissions."
The coin was submitted by Chief Albert Harden, a Fire Control Technician assigned to the Naval Submarine Base at King's Bay, Georgia, who joined the PCGS Collectors Club earlier this year. As a new member he used one of his coupons for four free submissions to have the 1937-D three-legged Buffalo certified by PCGS.
"I was thrilled when I learned the news and relieved to learn that it was a true three-legged Buffalo," said Harden. "I owe my Mom a big 'Thank you!' for getting me started as a collector when I was a kid."
"Number seven million is very attractive with a touch of amber color on the obverse. It's a handsome collector's coin that anyone would be happy to own. It's symbolic of collecting enjoyment," said Montgomery.
Montgomery personally telephoned the collector to surprise him with the news that his coin was something extraordinary for the company and to share the significant achievement with him.
To mark the achievement, Harden will receive a free lifetime membership in the PCGS Collectors Club, which normally costs $99 per year, and a one-year subscription to the print and online editions of the PCGS Population Report.
Among the other 6,999,999 coins submitted to PCGS the past 15 years are the world's most valuable rare coin, the $4.14 million Childs specimen 1804 Bust dollar (PCGS PR68), and the finest known 1913 Liberty Head nickel (PCGS PR66) that brought $1.84 million at a public auction this past March.
