PCGS CoinFacts Update
In the penultimate year of the Civil War, the $20 gold coin was king. More than 97% of all gold coins struck were in this export-friendly denomination. While the war raged on in the East and South, the population in faraway California still circulated silver and gold coins. Even though mintages of the 1864-S $5 and $10 denominations were small, they saw heavy use. For the $5, only one survives in Mint State and very few survive at all. It is the second most difficult S-mint $5 to find in any grade and stands as one of America’s most legendary Civil War coin issues. Read more.
PCGS Set Registry Update
The 50 cents coin depicting American Founding Parent Benjamin Franklin is a classic coin in U.S. numismatics. This coin was first issued in 1948, with the obverse portraying Franklin and the reverse depicting the Liberty Bell, which was called the "State House Bell" or the "Old State House Bell." The crack in the bell is a subject of much historical debate, and it supposedly cracked further in 1846 when it was rung for George Washington's birthday. The year 1963 was significant in American history; "Surfin' U.S.A." by the Beach Boys ranked as the number-one song according to Billboard magazine, "Cleopatra" was the top-grossing movie, and a new house cost around $19,300. It was also a year marked by tragedy, when United States President John F. Kennedy was assassinated at the age of 46. A mourning nation compelled legislators to approve a replacement design for the half dollar paying tribute to the fallen president. Therefore, 1963 was also the last year Benjamin Franklin's bust appeared on the half dollar. Shown above is a colorful 1963 Half Dollar depicting Franklin, which is part of the 1963 Year Set that PCGS has listed.
