PCGS CoinFacts Update

The 150% surge in 1953 Proof Set sales heralded a mid-century collecting boom that ultimately immortalized the short-lived Franklin Half Dollar. Though the vast majority were struck with fully brilliant, mirror-like surfaces, the earliest strikes off new dies produced frosted devices with deep mirrored contrast. That striking cameo effect turned John R. Sinnock's design into a centerpiece of 20th-century American numismatics and an absolute grail for modern coin enthusiasts.   Read more.

PCGS Set Registry Update

In 1938, the United States introduced a new nickel design, resulting in two different designs circulating simultaneously that year. Felix Schlag designed an obverse featuring President Thomas Jefferson and a reverse depicting Monticello, which was his residence. The 1938-dated Buffalo Nickel would be the last issue in that series, which started in 1913 and was designed by James Earle Fraser. An assistant to Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Fraser was paid $2,500 for his Buffalo Nickel design, which is the equivalent of more than $80,000 today. Buffalo Nickels initially received mixed reviews. The coin's low-relief design was also prone to more pronounced wear which created unsightly slicks. Nevertheless, the Buffalo Nickel is one of the most iconic designs ever produced by the U.S. Mint and remains very popular among collectors today.
