PCGS Grades Magnificent Rarities from James A. Stack, Sr., Collection Offered by Stack’s Bowers Galleries

(Santa Ana, California) – Professional Coin Grading Service (www.PCGS.com) recently graded a multitude of outstanding rarities hailing from the James A. Stack, Sr., Collection, which has been consigned to Stack’s Bowers Galleries and will be sold in two events slated for December 2025 and February 2026. Many trophy coins will cross the block in these two upcoming sales, which will present over 200 coins with a cumulative value of some $20 million. Several pieces are expected to individually fetch more than $1 million apiece, including a previously unpublished 1804 Class III Draped Bust Dollar graded PCGS PR65.

“We are absolutely thrilled to have graded what becomes the 16th-known 1804 Draped Bust Dollar,” said PCGS President Stephanie Sabin. “For generations, collectors have known of only 15 examples of the 1804 Dollar, including six Class III examples. The news of a 16th specimen stunned the numismatic world and shines a new light on the grandeur and mystique of what many call ‘the King of American coins.’”

Stack, Sr., Collection. “Coins such as the 1907 Rolled Edge Indian Eagle (PCGS MS67), 1795 Flowing Hair Dollar (PCGS MS64), and 1899 Liberty Head Half Eagle (PCGS Proof-69 DCAM) brought moments of awe and silence in the grading room as our team evaluated them. These aren’t just rare coins – they’re true numismatic treasures that trace back to one of the greatest collectors of the 20th century. The fact that Stack’s Bowers Galleries chose PCGS to grade these specimens, which are being publicly offered for the first time in at least 75 years, goes to show that the best coins always end up in PCGS holders.”

Stack, a collector who was unrelated to the family that founded Stack’s Bowers Galleries, began building his now-legendary numismatic cabinet by the late 1930s and set out to build the most comprehensive collection of his time. Before his passing in 1951, Stack managed to acquire such rarities as the 1894-S Barber Dime, 1838-O Liberty Seated Half Dollar, and 1870-S Liberty Seated Dollar. In the years following Stack’s death, his coins were sold in a series of auction events held by Stack’s Rare Coins (the predecessor of Stack’s Bowers Galleries) during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s.

It is often said that had Stack’s entire collection been sold in a single offering at the time, it would have easily become the most significant numismatic auction of the 20th century. Yet, as the prevailing winds of fate affords collectors today, the Stack Collection – a name long synonymous with rarity and quality – gives modern collectors one more chance to own a piece of numismatic history. The 1804 Class III Draped Bust Dollar as well as a selection of other early silver dollars and gold double eagles will be offered for sale December 9, 2025, during a highly anticipated auction event at Griffin Studios.
