Upcoming Auction Highlights - March 2023

Heritage Auctions will sell a plethora of amazing pattern coins. Many of the pattern coins highlighted in the sale are graded by PCGS and very scarce. In some cases, they are extremely rare, where we have only seen one or two examples at PCGS. It should be an exciting auction, offering some very interesting and significant patterns. Collectors can begin placing their bids on February 24, 2023, while the actual auction takes place on March 27, 2023.

In this article, we will highlight just a few of the coins from the sale.

$1  1836 Liberty Cap Gold (Gilt) Dollar, Judd-70, PCGS PR64

The obverse of this 1836 Liberty Cap Gold (Gilt) Dollar, Judd-70, features a Liberty cap with the word “LIBERTY” on the cap band. The design is very similar to some of the Mexican Silver 8 Reales. The reverse design shows a prominent “1” digit and the letter “D.” The coin appears to be made out of gold, but they're actually made from mostly copper and therefore described as gilt, or layered with gold. This example is graded PCGS PR64, and at PCGS we have graded only two examples, confirming that this coin is truly rare. This is a very attractive specimen, mainly due to its beautiful and nostalgic design. It’s a nice coin worthy of some strong bidding.

1C 1850 Judd-124 Restrike, PCGS PR65

This 1850 1 Cent Judd-124 Restrike is a very neat pattern, as the obverse has the inscription, “CENT,” largely featured toward the top of the design. Underneath “CENT” is a large circle near the center of the coin and underneath is shown the date, “1850.” The reverse carries the words “USA” and “ONE TENTH SILVER”; it also has a large circle toward the center of the coin, making for a very attractive design. PCGS has graded only nine examples, owing to the true scarceness of this coin. This PCGS PR65 crossing the block at Heritage Auctions should attract some good interest from collectors.

1871 Nickel Judd-1051, PCGS PR67BN

The obverse of this 1871 Nickel Judd-1051 is very similar to the Three Cent Nickel. The reverse features a large “V” and the word “Cents” underneath, with a wreath encircling part of the legends. Both the obverse and reverse exhibit strong, attractive blue toning. The design has a razor-sharp strike on both sides of the coin, showing complete details. The example being offered by Heritage Auctions has been graded PCGS PR67BN. Although it is graded as BN (Brown), the coin showcases heavy blue tones and is a very attractive piece that should command strong bidding.
