Early Proof Half Eagles are spectacularly rare, which is why the 1833 Capped Bust Half Eagle, Large Date is the only one that would even remotely qualify as semi-collectible. Oh, yeah -- only four are known, and one is in the National Numismatic Collection. Read more.
PCGS Set Registry Update
Modern coinage over the past few decades has become innovative, colorful, and intricate in design. Various themes may be used, and some coins feature a variety of elements, including precious stones and enamel work. One of the most basic ways to decorate silver is by way of a process known as tarnishing or antiquing. This method oxidizes (darkens) metal, which accentuates details on jewelry, silverware, and coins. Ancient Greek coinage is revered by collectors globally, and nice-looking examples can become expensive. In 1972, the Cook Islands began issuing circulation coinage that was produced by the New Zealand Mint. Over the years, the Cook Islands developed partnerships, which included licensing the country's name to produce modern coinage. One of these partnerships produced the 2-ounce .999 silver Gods of Olympus series. It was first coined in 2016 and features mythical gods such as Zeus, Hera, and Poseidon to name a few. These coins were antiqued and minted with a high-relief finish. The series continued in 2017; the obverse displays a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, and 13 coins complete the set. Shown above is a coin depicting Hermes on the reverse of a 2017 $2 Cook Islands that is part of the Cook Islands $2 Gods of Olympus Antique Finish Set, Circulation Strikes (2016-2017) that PCGS has recently listed.
