PCGS Set Registry Update
On October 1, 1961, the New York Yankees played their last game of the season and had already clinched the American League pennant. In the fourth inning, Roger Maris stepped up to the plate for his second at bat and blasted a solo home run to right field. This was his 61st home run, surpassing Babe Ruth’s single-season record of 60 home runs set in 1927. Roger Maris went on to win the Most Valuable Player award for 1961. That same year, the Denver Mint emitted a one cent coin that, decades later, would set records of its own. On April 6, 2025, a PCGS MS67+RD 1961-D Lincoln Cent sold for a record $3,200+, the most valuable price recorded for the coin, with only six examples known to exist in that grade. Other coins from this year can also boast strong values in high grades. Perhaps an ungraded set you have lying around contains a stellar example you may want to send for PCGS grading. If so, you may consider placing them in the 1961 Year Set that PCGS recently listed.
Additional sets from various countries have been added, so please feel free to browse the PCGS Set Registry when you have a chance and you may find there is a set for almost anyone to build. The PCGS Set Registry offers many different sets from all over the world and specialty sets for advanced collectors. We appreciate your continued patronage!
