PCGS Set Registry Update
The term "samurai" first appeared around the late eighth century in Japan and was associated with military might. The military ruling class reigned over the country for over 1,100 years. After its discovery at the Iwami Ginzan silver mine in Oda, Japan, in 1526, silver was more commonly used for commercial purposes. A wealthy merchant named Kamiya Jutei developed this mine, changing how the Japanese conducted business. Increased importation of goods from other countries included previously banned exotic items, such as those from China. During this bustling time, the Shogunate controlled lands, with the samurai assisting them. The feudal lords eventually took over the mines in Oda for "national interest." Gold was not officially coined in Japan until around 1599, and the composition of these gold issues contained silver and other metals. The floral-looking, gold PCGS MS62 (1824-32) Shu Bunsei C-17 shown above is part of the Japanese Shu, Circulation Strikes (1824-1869) set that PCGS has listed.
