Struck during the post-Civil War Reconstruction era amidst aggressive Treasury coin-melting programs, the 1872 Indian Cent has a subdued mintage of just over 4 million business strikes. Because 19th-century collectors were far more likely to save proof examples, Mint State circulation strikes are far more elusive today than the issue's mintage indicates. PCGS Set Registry Update
On August 12, 1940, Major League Baseball's Cleveland Indians played against the Detroit Tigers at Cleveland's Municipal Stadium. The Tigers' big star that year was Hank Greenberg, who won the most valuable player award in 1940 with a batting average of .340. However, the star of that August game was pitcher Bob Feller, as he won his 20th game of the season, which he finished by winning an astonishing 27 games! Feller also led the American League with the top earned run average of 2.61 and 261 strikeouts. He achieved a pitching "Triple Crown" that year, meaning he won all three important statistical categories.
