PCGS CoinFacts Update

Struck over four days, the 1864 Liberty Seated Dollar was produced in larger numbers than the 1863; still, the U.S. Mint could not produce coinage in sufficient quantities to account for the $50 to $60 million the federal government spent each year to prosecute the war and preserve the Union. Fortunately, many attractive coins of this date survive in Gem condition. The same cannot be said for many silver dollar dates issued a decade earlier.   Read more.

PCGS Set Registry Update

The Bulgarian National Assembly was established in 1879, and it elected Alexander Joseph (Alexander I) as the first kynaz, or prince. He was also known as Alexander of Battenberg of the First Bulgarian Principality. His uncle was Tsar Alexander II of Russia, who had recommended him for this position of power. Alexander I soon broke from the original governing powers after a conversation with his uncle that led to the creation of absolute power in Bulgaria. Under Alexander I, the Revolution of Plovdiv on September 18, 1885, brought a territory of Eastern Rumelia, which was under the Ottoman Empire, into Bulgaria, but before long this spurred a coup against Alexander I. This splendid-looking silver medal from the Eastern Rumelia Union is part of the Bulgarian Medals of Alexander I of Battenberg (1879–1886) that collectors might consider building on the PCGS Set Registry.
