PCGS Set Registry Update

James Cook was the first European explorer to discover the Hawaiian island of Kauai on January 18, 1778. The Hawaiian islands have been visited by tourists since the 1860s and officially became part of the United States in 1959. Circulating coinage was first minted for Hawaii by the San Francisco Mint in 1883, and it was designed by Charles E. Barber. Four coins are in the series, and each coin bears the portrait of King Kalakaua I. More than 90% of the coinage was melted, and the one dollar denomination is the most valuable coin within the series. Many collectors seek this coin in uncirculated condition, but Low Ball collectors try to find the lowest-graded example to rank at the top of the PCGS Set Registry in the Low Ball categories. To assemble a set with the lowest grades may be just as challenging as to put together a set with the highest grades. PCGS has recently listed the Hawaii Type Set Low Ball (1847-1883) for collectors to consider building.
