INTRODUCTION
This work is a provisional condition census listing of the 17th-century coins of Massachusetts, Maryland, and the Sommer Islands. In undertaking this work the author has surveyed more than 800 auction catalogues, mail sale catalogues, and fixed price lists, (see the bibliography). All illustrated appearances of these coins have been carefully recorded, and the finest (as determined by the listed catalogue grades) examples of each variety have been enumerated in the listings which appear on the following pages. Examples illustrated in reference books have also been enumerated in order to augment the census listings of particularly rare varieties.
The numismatic data on the following pages has been divided into three categories;
Section 1: The enumeration of all specimens of Massachusetts NE and Willow Tree coins known to the author. The census of the Willow Tree coins is largely an updating of Sydney P. Noe's work. All specimens are attributed using Noe numbers. See: The Silver Coinage of Massachusetts, Sydney P. Noe, 1973 (Quarterman Reprint).
Section 2: Provisional condition census list of Massachusetts Oak and Pine Tree coins. Generally the finest 5 to 12 specimens of each variety are enumerated (though not necessarily in order of fineness). The number of auction appearances of each variety is also reported (based on a survey of 717 auction sales as listed in the bibliography; the number of auction appearances only includes pieces which have been illustrated). Noe numbers have been used to attribute all specimens in this group. Oak Tree Twopence have not been enumerated in this study.
Section 3: Provisional condition census list of 17th-century Maryland and Sommer Island coins. As in Section 2 above, the author has generally listed the finest 5 to 12 examples of each variety (not necessarily in the order of fineness). The different varieties are attributed according to both Don Taxay’s Comprehensive Catalogue and Encyclopedia of U.S. Coins, 1976, and Walter Breen’s Complete Encyclopedia of U.S. and Colonial Coins, 1988.
Only coins that have been illustrated are enumerated in the following work. All pedigree information is collected from two sources: 1) Pedigree information written into the descriptions of coins in the references and 2) illustrations of coins which by comparison, enable identification of reappearing specimens. It is possible that there is some duplication in the listings since the illustrations are not always clear enough to make an identification.
This work is by no means definitive. The author hopes to update this study further by increasing the number of auction sales and other references surveyed.
Acknowledgment:
The author expresses thanks to Michael J. Hodder for many valuable suggestions pertaining to this manuscript, and for much information on the Cecil Calvert issues of Maryland in the Norweb collection.
Key to Symbols and Abbreviations:
* - asterisk - the coin is illustrated in the sale with
which the asterisk is associated.
** - double asterisk - listings followed by ** pertain to catalogues that
were not surveyed in the preparation of this work. This symbol
is used only when the lot # is included in the listing. It should be
inferred in cases where no lot number appears that the sale was not
surveyed.
CI - Compare Illustrations - The appearance of a specimen in two or more
catalogues (or other references) was determined on the basis of the
illustrations.

BIBLIOGRAPHY
The following comprises a list of the public auction catalogues, mail-bid sales, a-fixed price lists examined in the preparation of the above work. Although over 700 auction catalogues, together with numerous mail bid sales and fixed price lists, were examined, only the following contained 17th-century coins of Massachusetts Bay, Maryland, and the Sommer islands. Catalogues and price lists are enumerated below as follows: 1) Public auction sales, 2) Mail bid sales, 3) Fixed price lists.
In addition to catalogues, illustrations of coins in the following texts were often included in the study:
1) Walter Breen's Complete Encyclopedia of U.S. and Colonial Coins, 1988, W.H. Breen;
2) The Secret of the Good Samaritan Shilling, 1959, E.P. Newman;
3) The Silver Coinage of Massachusetts, 1973 (reprint), S.P. Noe;
4) Comprehensive Catalogue and Encyclopedia of U.S. Coins, 1976, D. Taxay;
5) Silver in American Life, 1979, Yale University;
6) A Guide Book of U.S. Coins, 1985, R.S. Yeoman.
