The 1848 Quarter Dollar is a surprisingly tough date. It has one of the lowest mintages and the second smallest population (according to PCGS) of any of the dates from the 1840s. As one might expect, this date is hard to find in any condition, and is very scarce in Mint State. PCGS has certified only nine Uncirculated 1848 Quarters, the finest of which is a single PCGS MS65. In circulated grades, this date commands a small premium, and Mint State pricing does not appear as high as it should be considering how scarce this date actually is.
